WBL hosted two special programs in July, with a visit from Ronald McDonald speaking on the importance of reading and a visit from the Taradiddle Players doing an excerpt performance of Brother Rabbit Spinning Free! Look out for WBL’s fall calendar of programs for children, teens, and adults!

One World, Many Stories Summer Reading Kickoff Party

WBL always pulls out a crowd when we throw our infamous Summer Reading Parties and this year wasn’t any different! WBL hosted 175 children for its “One World, Many Stories Summer Reading Kickoff” party!

There were many stations and an ice cream bar! Each station took you to a different place around the world! They went from Africa to Japan, to Latin countries, to Italy! All the stations had a display of books from the different countries and hosted a craft. The station in Africa made custom African neckware! In Japan, the kids made Carp Streamers! In Italy, the kids were able to take pictures with the “Tower of Pisa” and put together a plate of pizza! The Latin station, made maracas and were able to decorate them however they liked! There was also, a Hawaiian station, where there was a limbo! And a limbo contest was held! There were two winners of the contest and they won summer reading t-shirts!

We would like to thank the volunteers that helped with this program! It would not have been very successful without them!

WBL’s Lego Building Competition

WBL’s teens competed in our Lego Building competition! The teens had guidelines to follow and they far exceeded the minimum in the guidelines! The one guideline that was made very clear from the beginning was to be CREATIVE!!! We had three contestants and only one could win and that contestant is (drumroll please!)….Colin Kuenzi who came all the way from Mint Hill to be here for the competition! Thanks Colin! The winner won their favorite choice of 6 books! Check out pictures below!

Museum of African American History @ WBL

WBL Library Vickie Chapman presented a live museum of African American History with such historic figures as Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver, the 4 Little girls, and Thurgood Marshall all portrayed by volunteers and staff! Patrons were encouraged to ask the figures about themselves! Check out the video below!

You Art!

WBL’s teens went old school on this craft and made a collage of their wonderful characteristics with magazine cut outs of words and pictures! These teens are very creative and it shows through their work! You too can do You Art! Try it out sometime, it makes a great piece for framing!

WBL’s Spreading the Love

For the second year in a row WBL has hosted a program called Spread the Love where we invite patrons to make Valentines for the less fortunate! This year WBL’s Valentines will go to a local nursing home! Check out some of the beautiful cards that were made by patrons big and small!!!

…and how do you know? Because we’ve displayed hearts and Black History information everywhere! WBL had Valentine’s overload in the children’s area where we displayed 103 Valentine’s books! Also, WBL hosted a special African American History Book sale where we put out more than 200 items for sale on black history figures! The books sold like hot cakes and it’s still the beginning of February and we only have about 15 items on the table for sale currently!

Charlotte Fit Girls Program with WBL

WBL Librarian Jenny France and Amrita Patel of Matthews worked with a program called Charlotte Fit Girls at Reid Park Elementary for 6 weeks. Fit Girls is a fitness program for 4th and 5th grade girls that combines running, reading and leadership development. At practices girls ran laps, played games and discussed books with strong female protagonists. They cap the season off by completing a “Polar Bear Mile” at Freedom Park. Jenny remembers her group, “We’ve had a very special group of girls this season. We’ve read books like the Vet Volunteer series, played games and trained for our race.” On Saturday, December 18th, the Charlotte Fit Girls participated in a “Polar Bear Mile” at Freedom Park (It was so cold it even snowed!), followed by a pizza party at Fuel Pizza in Park Road shopping center.

Get in and out @ WBL

WBL now has a 15 minute Express computer! Now patrons can get in and out quickly without waiting! The Express computer is located conveniently next to the PC Reservation Station and directly in front of the printer! How convenient for someone on the go!!!

We MET our Volunteer GOAL!!!

Our Volunteer thermomether is overflowing with volunteer hours! WBL has surpassed the initial goal of 250 volunteer hours and now we have a total of 347 volunteer hours since July 2010!

Because we are all about exceeding goals at WBL…we’ve increased our goal to 1250 volunteer hours! Thanks to all of our volunteers for their time contributions and for helping us reach our goal!

Detrice Fox organized a festive volunteer reception on Wednesday, December 22 from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Krispy Kreme donuts, holiday cookies, Chick-Fil-A nuggets, ice-cream, chips and soft drinks were enjoyed by all. Detrice provided each volunteer with a certificate of recognition to honor their unique talents and contributions. Volunteers also took home some door prizes including library tote-bags, copies of To Kill A Mockingbird, CMLibrary pencils and rental coupons. Sandy Seawright honored one of his long-time book discussion group members for her faithful patronage and service to facilitate this ongoing adult program. It was a wonderful event with library staff, teens and adult volunteers sharing their hopes for the holiday season and reminiscing. Several attendees were gracious enough to share testimonials to convey memorable experiences they have had using the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and to describe why they volunteer their service @ WBL.

Thank you Detrice for affording these area youth and retirees with meaningful volunteer experiences at your location! Excellent work!!
